Centre de Formation des Adultes en Langues et Cultures
CFALC or Centre de Formation des Adultes en Langues et Cultures is the name
of the language school that Tiina and I attend. They generally attract
missionaries and Peace Corps volunteers.
The mosquito problem is so bad in some of the rooms that most days I have my class outside. That was not a problem
until this week when the temperatures started going over 105F!!! The classrooms are not air conditioned but it would be
nice to at least have a fan. The pictures below were taken at 8am before the heat really started. On Monday and
Wednesday I have afternoon classes and those are quite challenging with the heat, even WITH a fan. I keep reminding
myself that there was a time before air conditioning and people survived somehow. It works for now but the professors
keep reminding us that this is spring time and it is comfortable for them. Wait till next month when it is 120F and the
low at night time is 90F!!!

Class begins at 8am everyday. We have a coffee break at 10am after which
classes continue until noon. Siesta begins at 12:30pm and continues until 3pm!!!
To me it seems like a really long time but now that the temperatures have
begun to heat up (it was 107F the other day) I have begun to understand why
the shade it is not too bad yet but the sun is so strong here that if you stand in
the sun for ten or fifteen minutes you will already be burnt. The cultural
expectation is that all adults cover their legs, pants for men, long dresses for you
from sun burn and the dirt that would accumulate on your sweaty legs! After
the Siesta, I resume afternoon classes on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Below I included some pictures of our break room where we have coffee, tea,
or water. We have discussions with other missionaries or the professors but
it is forbidden to converse in English!!! It is hard but now after a month of
this habit I have noticed that it has helped increase the speed of my learning
and speaking.
