Baptism of Jacques SAM
Although we had to leave Ouagadougou a little earlier than planned, we were not going to leave
without fulfilling the promise to baptise baby Jacques.

Baptismal Booklet for Jacques SAM.
Then children were brought to him
that he might lay his hands on them
and pray. The disciples rebuked the
people, but Jesus said, "Let the little
children come to me and do not
hinder them, for to such belongs the
kingdom of heaven."
Matthew 19:13-14

Wash me thoroughly from my
iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!
For I know my transgressions, and
my sin is ever before me. Against you,
you only, have I sinned and done
what is evil in your sight, so that you
may be justified in your words and
blameless in your judgment. Behold, I
was brought forth in iniquity, and in
sin did my mother conceive me.
Behold, you delight in truth in the
inward being, and you teach me
wisdom in the secret heart. Purge me
with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
wash me, and I shall be whiter than
snow. Let me hear joy and gladness;
let the bones that you have broken
rejoice. Hide your face from my sins,
and blot out all my iniquities. Create
in me a clean heart, O God, and renew
a right spirit within me. Cast me not
away from your presence, and take
not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore
to me the joy of your salvation, and
uphold me with a willing spirit. Then
I will teach transgressors your ways,
and sinners will return to you. Deliver
me from bloodguiltiness, O God, O
God of my salvation, and my tongue
will sing aloud of your righteousness.
O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth
will declare your praise.
Psalms 51:2-15
Their offspring shall be known among the
nations, and their descendants in the midst
of the peoples; all who see them shall
acknowledge them, that they are an
offspring the LORD has blessed. I will
greatly rejoice in the LORD; my soul shall
exult in my God, for he has clothed me with
the garments of salvation; he has covered
me with the robe of righteousness, as a
bridegroom decks himself like a priest with
a beautiful headdress, and as a bride
adorns herself with her jewels. For as the
earth brings forth its sprouts, and as a
garden causes what is sown in it to sprout
up, so the Lord GOD will cause
righteousness and praise to sprout up
before all the nations.
Isaiah 61:9-11

After this I looked, and behold, a great
multitude that no one could number, from
every nation, from all tribes and peoples
and languages, standing before the throne
and before the Lamb, clothed in white
robes, with palm branches in their hands,
and crying out with a loud voice, "Salvation
belongs to our God who sits on the throne,
and to the Lamb!" And all the angels were
standing around the throne and around the
elders and the four living creatures, and
they fell on their faces before the throne
and worshiped God, saying, "Amen!
Blessing and glory and wisdom and
thanksgiving and honor and power and
might be to our God forever and ever!
Amen." Then one of the elders addressed
me, saying, "Who are these, clothed in
white robes, and from where have they
come?" I said to him, "Sir, you know." And
he said to me, "These are the ones coming
out of the great tribulation. They have
washed their robes and made them white in
the blood of the Lamb. "Therefore they are
before the throne of God, and serve him
day and night in his temple; and he who sits
on the throne will shelter them with his
presence. They shall hunger no more,
neither thirst anymore; the sun shall not
strike them, nor any scorching heat. For the
Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their
shepherd, and he will guide them to springs
of living water, and God will wipe away
every tear from their eyes."
Revelation 7:9-17
Afterwards, we all feasted.  This is one of the
traditional meals called RIZ GRAS.  Rice with
tomato sauce, cabbage, fish, and chicken.

The meat is only brought out on special
occasions.  If you want to see where the meat
came from then

(Commentary by Miss Heather Zabel)
Only 12% of Burkina Faso is Christian.  It cannot be assumed that the rest of the people
know about Christianity much less what baptism means.  In fact it would be very dangerous
just to baptise the child without explaining why we baptise and what happens in baptism
because the most popular religion is animism or tribal religions.  West Africa is the origin of
voodoo.  Therefore I am explaining that we are all born sinners and separated from God and
we are in need of a spiritual birth that comes from God.
Jesus answered him, "Truly, truly, I
say to you, unless one is born again
he cannot see the kingdom of God."
Nicodemus said to him, "How can a
man be born when he is old? Can he
enter a second time into his mother's
womb and be born?" Jesus answered,
"Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one
is born of water and the Spirit, he
cannot enter the kingdom of God.
That which is born of the flesh is
flesh, and that which is born of the
Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I
said to you, 'You must be born again.'
John 3:3-7
Baby Jacques was initially wrapped in a dark towel to symbolize the sinful human nature
that we inherit from Adam (see Romans 5).  But after we are baptized, our impurity is
replaced with the purity of Christ.  He clothes and sanctifies us in righteousness.
Everyone wanted to hold the babies.  The day was
really like being part of one big family and that is just
what we all are in Christ.

And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of
his Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" So
you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son,
then an heir through God.
Galatians 4:6-7
